Golden Shrimp with Crispy Cheese Crust Recipe

Ingredients

1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
8 slices white sandwich bread
1/2 pound sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 (7-ounce) can shrimp, drained
3 large eggs
2 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
A pinch of MSG (optional)

Large shallow or 2-quart baking dish

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Lightly grease the baking dish.
  2. Spread the softened butter on both sides of each bread slice. Cut the slices into 1-inch squares.
  3. Place half of the bread squares in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the shredded cheese and half of the drained shrimp.
  4. Repeat with the remaining bread, cheese, and shrimp to form a second layer.
  5. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, then whisk in the milk. Stir in the salt, celery salt, dry mustard, paprika, and black pepper until well combined. Add a pinch of MSG if desired.
  6. Pour the egg-and-milk mixture evenly over the layered bread, cheese, and shrimp, pressing gently so the liquid soaks into the bread.
  7. Bake at 325°F until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden, about 35–45 minutes depending on your oven.
  8. Remove from the oven and let rest a few minutes before serving. For buffet-style service, place the baking dish in a chafing dish to keep warm.
