Ingredients
1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
8 slices white sandwich bread
1/2 pound sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 (7-ounce) can shrimp, drained
3 large eggs
2 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
A pinch of MSG (optional)
Large shallow or 2-quart baking dish
Method
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Lightly grease the baking dish.
- Spread the softened butter on both sides of each bread slice. Cut the slices into 1-inch squares.
- Place half of the bread squares in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the shredded cheese and half of the drained shrimp.
- Repeat with the remaining bread, cheese, and shrimp to form a second layer.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, then whisk in the milk. Stir in the salt, celery salt, dry mustard, paprika, and black pepper until well combined. Add a pinch of MSG if desired.
- Pour the egg-and-milk mixture evenly over the layered bread, cheese, and shrimp, pressing gently so the liquid soaks into the bread.
- Bake at 325°F until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden, about 35–45 minutes depending on your oven.
- Remove from the oven and let rest a few minutes before serving. For buffet-style service, place the baking dish in a chafing dish to keep warm.
