I found an intriguing mix on the Prepared Pantry site called fully loaded potato bread. The mix includes sour cream, chives and bacon bits—everything you might want for a baked potato–inspired loaf. I was curious to try it in my bread machine.

When I opened the pouch I could immediately see the dried ingredients and spices. The aroma hinted at savory herbs and dehydrated vegetables, which made me optimistic.

I added the mix contents to my bread pan and followed a basic cycle with a medium crust setting. The mix requires adding butter and water, so I measured those and added them as directed.

The package suggests using water at 80°F. My Zojirushi bread machine has a preheat step within the bread cycle, so I used tap water without worrying about the exact temperature. If your machine lacks a preheat option, it’s wise to follow the package temperature guidance.

Even with a prepared mix, I always check the dough a few minutes after kneading begins to make sure it forms a smooth ball. This dough did just that and required no adjustments.

So pretty!

The kitchen filled with a savory, appetizing aroma as the loaf baked. When it finished, the crust looked even and appealing, and the interior texture was pleasingly soft.

Taste-wise, the loaf was a hit at home. My partner loved it, and I enjoyed it as well. The flavors of sour cream, chives and bacon bits came through clearly, giving the bread that baked-potato character. I felt it was slightly salty for my taste, which kept it from being perfect, but it remained very enjoyable overall.

My Favorite Bread Mixes

Here are two other Prepared Pantry mixes I return to again and again; I buy several of each every year.

Prepared Pantry New York Dill Rye Mix

New York Dill Rye

This mix gives off a dill-and-onion aroma that’s reminiscent of sour cream and onion potato chips. The scent is delightful while the loaf bakes, and the finished bread is consistently flavorful.

Prepared Pantry Black Russian (Pumpernickel) Bread

black russian bread mix

The Black Russian mix produces a rich, rye-forward aroma as it bakes and a dense, almost cake-like texture in the finished loaf. It’s one of my favorites for hearty sandwiches and when you want a robust rye flavor.
