Today I’m sharing a stylish Under The Sea party designed for older kids and pre-teens — a more sophisticated ocean theme rather than a Little Mermaid–style event.

The centerpiece of the desserts was a simple two-tiered cake that looked custom but was easy to prepare. To save time and cost, the host ordered a plain bakery cake and embellished it at home. A sprinkle of brown sugar made a convincing “sand” layer, then shells, starfish and a few tropical flowers turned it into a showpiece.
I’ve done a similar makeover on a store-bought cake for my daughter’s graduation and was thrilled with the result — simple additions transform a basic cake into something special.

Invitations received a delicate finishing touch with raffia and small shells tied on before mailing, giving guests a preview of the ocean-inspired theme.

For seating, two rectangular tables were joined to form a large square so everyone could sit together and enjoy the centerpiece. Matching chair covers or coordinated linens will complete the polished look.

Live goldfish in mini bowls served as charming centerpieces and doubled as take-home favors. Each guest received a mini fishbowl with a goldfish to bring home. The centerpieces were styled with aqua tablecloths, fish nets, coral accents and shells. Clear aqua pebbles in the bowls added color, and a small mermaid figurine provided a playful surprise.

A simple band of shells and starfish made pretty napkin rings and reinforced the theme on the table setting.

The dessert table included an attractive platter of cupcakes decorated with starfish and shells to match the cake. Coordinated colors and consistent details kept the sweets table visually appealing.

Near the end of the party, guests helped themselves to treats from an Ocean Candy Bar. Use apothecary jars, shells and fish nets to style the display, and provide scoops and bags so guests can fill their own take-home candy.

Another fun summer celebration to consider is a vintage-style Luau party with plenty of playful details.
